Real life story: Hurricane smokes out Oliveira family
The weather outside was really bad. It was windy, rainy and very stormy. I could not go outside to play. The electricity was off so all we could do was play games inside.
The wind started to blow and whistle stronger against the windows making them rattle. It was beginning to scare my brother and me and I started to panic and cry "Mommie Mommie where are you''.
My mother, Betty Lou Oliveira, came home and as soon as she came in the door sparks came from one of the lights in the hallway. My mother immediately went to the meter box to turn off the electricity but it was too late it was already on fire.
My mother quickly grabbed me and my brother and we headed towards the front door. My mother tried to put the key in the door but it would not open. (It was one of those old fashioned big keys). We then went to the steps by the garage and got out through that way. We all went to my great auntie's (Hilda Demoura) house across the street from us to call the fire department.
While we were there my great auntie say smoke coming from under the woodwork.
It was coming from the apartment below us. My mother went downstairs to see and the whole place was engulfed in flames.
One of the firemen came across the road to get the key from my mother, when he tried to open the door to my house the door would not open, so he had to get in through the window.
My father, Edward Oliveira, arrived and was shocked to see the fire trucks in my yard he was wondering what had happened.
The firemen investigated the blaze and found out that a wire had fallen which lead to my house. We were lucky the house only had a lot of smoke damage.
