charity appeal announced yesterday.

The appeal, run by Ms Lucy Willitts from Lindo's Market in Devonshire, is planning to send two containers of supplies from well-wishers to war-torn Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Appeal spokeswoman Mrs. Sallie Singleton said the first container left yesterday for New York, shipped by Bermuda Container Line.

A Croatian shipping line would then take it across the Atlantic to the port of Rijeka, which has not been affected by the fighting.

It will be then be trucked south to Split, to a Bosnia-Herzegovina government centre, Mrs. Singleton said.

From there the gifts would go to Croatian and Bosnian refugees. A second container is so far half full, she added.

"They are still appealing to the public for canned food and soap.

"We have heard that all the soap factories have been destroyed, so what little they have they can't get clean.'' Liquid detergent and bars of soap were welcome, she added.

"It's been a wonderful outpouring from Bermuda. People have been so generous.'' Gifts can be dropped off at Lindo's between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the TS Bermuda Sea Cadet Corps have responded to the appeal by presenting cartons of supplies.

The nine to 18-year-olds added a box of stuffed toys to their donation of non-perishable food and other items.

The cadets, whose headquarters are at Admiralty House, assembled the hampers from items they brought from home.
