Reprieve for disqualified drivers comes into effect
the next two weeks.
Special desks will be set up at the Transport Control Department to hand back the licences to drivers who are eligible.
TCD Director Mr. Donald Dane said that under changes in the Traffic Offences Act, people disqualified from driving before June 29, who had no subsequent disqualifications on or after that date, are eligible to have their licences restored after Tuesday.
Mr. Dane said: "This does not include persons convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.
"Some 1,000 persons are eligible and of these, about 400 had their licences taken and held by TCD.
"These persons may now go to TCD to have their licences restored. The special desks will be in operation between December 29, 30 and 31 and on January 4-7 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.'' Disqualified drivers not sure whether they qualify to have their licences restored can call 295-6427 for confirmation.
