Residents seek ban on shows
Gazette was told yesterday.
Pembroke resident Mr. John Simmons said he, and at least three other residents from as far away as Cloverdale in Devonshire, will write to their MPs to have them persuade concert organisers to hold shows elsewhere.
The Friswell's Hill resident, who has made numerous complaints to Police about loud music coming from concerts at the stadium, said noise and the violence and rowdiness that marred Mr. Choy Aming's Reggae Festival last weekend are two major reasons why shows should not be held there.
At the festival, featuring "Third World'' and other reggae artists, hundreds of gatecrashers entered the stadium through self-made holes in the fence and hurled bottles and stones at Police who unsuccessfully tried to stop them.
Mr. Aming estimated he lost nearly $60,000 as a result of those who came through holes in the stadium's fence or used fake tickets to enter the show.
Mr. Simmons, who two weeks ago threatened to take legal action against Mr.
Aming if the Festival ran beyond its permitted time, said: "We're sorry Mr.
Aming got ripped off. But he could have avoided it.
"If Mr. Aming had taken our suggestions and took the concert to Dockyard, this may not have happened.'' Mr. Simmons said he has already discussed the idea of banning concerts at Dockyard with Finance Minister and Devonshire South MP the Hon. David Saul.
And he believed the matter was discussed in Cabinet, because Youth and Sports Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon assured residents that the shows will not run beyond their permitted time -- 1 a.m.
"This year Police were on top of this,'' Mr. Simmons admitted.
"But,'' he said, "if the shows are held in Dockyard they can run later, residents will not be disturbed, and shows can be controlled.'' Stressing that he enjoys reggae and has two teenage sons who also enjoy the music, Mr. Simmons said perhaps Government could persuade concert organisers to take their shows to Darrell's Island.
Referring to last night's Reggae Sunsplash concert -- held under tight security -- he said: "I hope this is the final show held at National Stadium''.
