Rules changed for pageant

A story in yesterday's paper incorrectly reported that changes to rules in the Miss Bermuda Islands contest were announced on Monday night after the Miss Talent part of the pageant. The rule change was announced on July 7 at orientation.

The Miss Talent competition took place on Sunday night. Miss Talent, Miss Tourism, Miss Photogenic, and Miss Amity will be announced on the night of the pageant -- August 29, prior to the announcement of the ten finalists.

Rule changes should prevent another controversy which led to complaints of racism and fixing in last year's Miss Bermuda Islands competition.

The winner of this year's show on Sunday, August 29 will be decided on the night to prevent any criticism.

Last year's winner Miss Diana Mitchell was chosen over two nights, astounding an audience who complained about her performance during the pageant itself.

And it led to weeks of legal wrangling before Miss Mitchell was finally able put it all behind her and compete in the Miss World contest in Sun City, South Africa.

The rule change was announced last night by organiser Mr. Terry Smith after the Miss Talent part of the pageant.

The problem last year arose out of the scores for the Miss Tourism interviews the night before Miss Bermuda Islands counting as 30 percent of the final total.

Judges in the contest had no idea who the winner was until the scores were added together.

Miss Mitchell was accused of per forming less than perfectly during the Miss Bermuda Islands questions and when it was announced that she had won it led to jeers from some of the audience in the Southampton Princess.

However Mr. Smith said that the Miss Tourism scoring, which will be held on Saturday, August 28, will not be included in the final result.

He said: "It is partly as a result of what happened last year, but it should make things much simpler.'' Mr. Smith said Miss Talent, Miss Tourism and Miss Bermuda Islands will be announced together.

Competitors in the Miss Talent section are Miss Amanda Petty representing Sandys South, Miss Koshe Scott representing Warwick East, Miss Libby Cook representing Paget West, Miss Marcia Vanderpool representing Pembroke East, Miss Ingrid Welch representing Smith's and Miss Alexandria Dowling representing Hamilton Parish.

Most of the competitors were in vited to the Pink Beach Hotel last night to meet guests as part of the round of events leading up to the competition itself.
