The 35-year-old was flown by helicopter from the US Peterson into the Airport at 6.25 p.m. and rushed by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The drama began at 12.25 p.m. when the man began suffering from an internal disorder when the ship was 325 miles northeast of the Island.

A Harbour Radio spokesman said the man was given blood on-board the ship, but a decision was taken to change course towards Bermuda in case he needed to be flown to hospital.

A US Navy helicopter, believed to be a Sea King, left the ship at 4.55 pm., touching down on the Island at 6.25 p.m.

The Harbour Radio spokesman said the man, who has not been named, is in a critical condition.
