Sister Glow shows a lot of compassion
Pastoral evangelist, Fern Wade, is an extraordinary woman who follows her faith.
She possesses the attributes of leadership which compel her to reach out to others through her role as the coordinator of Bermuda's "Hands of Love Ministry'', a registered charity.
Mrs. Wade remarked about leadership: "Firstly, the role of a leader is being able to empower people.
"Secondly, remember to respect others and thirdly a leader's character is very important and should depict decency, generosity, integrity and humility.'' "Sister Glow'' is the affectionate nickname given her by the street men. She reaches out to those in need with warmth and devotion.
She has faithfully assisted the homeless, ex-inmates, single parents and those less fortunate for about 18 years.
Compassion has a big place in her heart and is projected through her favourite motto: "If you talk the Christian life you must also walk the Christian life.
"One hungry person affects us all.
"One homeless person affects us all.
"One hurting person affects us all.
"One rebellious child affects us all.
"We are all a part of the whole community.
"When one is broken we as a community can't function until we fix that which is broken.
"We are all one, it is not them or those people it is us, all of us. It is not me but we.'' One of her dreams is that one day "Hands of Love Ministry'' will be in each parish and that they will have a large warehouse to house, feed, clothe and minister to people.
She believes the organisation will go international on a worldwide basis.
"It is my dream to help other women throughout the world who have ministries.'' Mrs. Wade is an inspirational leader. She received the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour and the Bermuda Professional Women's Association - Woman of the year award in 1996.
Mrs. Wade has a solid educational background as she attended Prospect Primary and Secondary School for Girls followed by the Bermuda College, Cranleigh Secretarial School and Adult Education School.
However, she says the only letters behind her name are, "B.A.C. for Born Again Christian'' and "W.O.C.C. for Woman of Christian Calling and Woman of Christian Character.'' As she grew up she had the guidance of two exceptionally strong women, her grandmother and her mother.
"My grandmother taught me to put God first, be kind, and to always do people right. My mother taught me to be independent and to carry myself well and in a respectful manner.'' Mrs. Wade believes that leaders are not born, they are made. Her favourite role model is Rosa Parks, the black woman who refused to relinquish her seat in the front of the bus to a white lady and sit at the back of the bus during Martin Luther King's era in 1963.
"I have many pictures of Rosa Parks. She stood up for what she believed in, equality of the races. She is living and would be about 80 years old. I have always dreamed of meeting her.'' Mrs. Wade has been married for 28 years to her husband, Keith, and they have two sons, Shawn age 24 and Kion age 21.
She is a member of the Human Rights (Race) Committee and Administrator of the Woodshop Plus and Community Development Programme.
