Spinning Wheel pulls out of bars, clubs association
together to crack down on unruly customers.
The Court Street club joined Captain's Lounge, Hubie's Bar, Place's Place, and Swinging Doors in 1995 as the United Bar Owners Association to ban disruptive and violent individuals from their establishments.
But an advertisement in The Royal Gazette recently declared Spinning Wheel was "no longer associated with the United Bar Owners Association by order of the committee''.
The defection means Spinning Wheel is no longer bound by the Association's rules and is free to accept individuals on its stop list.
A similar organisation of bars and businesses who came together to cut down violence was dissolved in the early 1990s due to infighting.
However, Spinning Wheel manager Gladwin Ming downplayed the club's decision to leave and gave no indication about what prompted the move. But he admitted Association members had sometimes "agreed and disagreed'', and added the club would now "do what they saw fit'' with regard to the banning of customers.
Melvin Dillas of Captain's Lounge echoed Mr. Ming and said the move only meant Spinning Wheel would no longer be involved in the Round Robin social event held between the clubs each Monday night.
