Star power boosts fundraising drive
an overwhelming success.
Association president Judy Simons told The Royal Gazette that profits tallied to date had reached $60,000 and she was optimistic that the $100,000 target would be achieved.
Popular international recording artist Peabo Bryson was the featured entertainment at a gala dinner held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess hotel last month.
Tickets for the sold-out concert were $200 each. Mrs. Simons was clearly pleased with the event and pointed out that it was a first attempt for the Association.
"We had not done anything like this before and knew we only had one chance to get it right,'' she said, "and I think we did because there is certainly a buzz going through the Island about it.
"Many people supported the event because they wanted to support the Association and we are really pleased about that.'' The gala banquet marked the start of a $3 million capital campaign for the Association which wants to start a Cancer Resource Centre.
A final tally of the proceeds from the event is expected next week.
