Steer clear of traffic tie-ups
Year's Day as the city celebrates the new Millennium.
The city-centre bash begins at 2 p.m. and wraps up at midnight, with Front, Queen, Church and Burnaby streets being the scene of most of the action.
The Front Street portion will be cleared by 5.30 p.m. when the Sparkling Moonlight Parade will begin.
The Sparkling Moonlight Parade will include pedestrians. There will be six golf carts carrying the sound equipment. And the city train will lead the parade. Four gombey troupes will also participate.
The parade will assemble in Barr's Bay Park and Albouy's Point and follow a set route from Point Pleasant Road, east along Front Street at the entrance to No. 8 Dock.
Between 7 p.m. and midnight, there will be a Salute to the Stars concert at the City Hall car park, followed by fireworks at midnight.
Food will be served in stalls on Wesley and Victoria streets.
Police said closed-circuit television will be continuously and proactively operated throughout this period.
Starting at 10 a.m., traffic going east into Hamilton along Pitts Bay Road will be diverted north on Bermudiana Road and traffic going west along Front Street will be diverted north on Parliament Street.
Traffic going west along Reid Street will be diverted north on Parliament Street.
On January 1, traffic going west along Crow Lane will be diverted along Spurling Hill.
City Hall, No. 1 Shed and No. 5 Dock car parks will all be closed from 6 p.m.
on December 31, 1999 to 10 a.m. on January 2.
Parking will not be permitted from 6 a.m. on January 1 in the following areas: Point Pleasant Road and Front Street -- between Par-La-Ville Road and the eastern City boundary (both sides) -- until 8 p.m.; Queen Street -- between Front and Church streets (both sides), Burnaby Street -- Between Front and Church streets (both sides), Reid Street -- between Parliament and Queen streets (both sides), Church Street -- between Par-La-Ville Car Park and Cedar Avenue (both sides), and Wesley Street -- between Serpentine Road and Church Street (both sides), Victoria Street -- between Cedar Avenue and Wesley Street (except for buses) and Washington Street -- between Park and Victoria streets until 1 a.m. on January 2; No. 1 Shed Car Park and No. 5 Dock Car Park -- until 8 p.m. on January 1.
Parking will be available at no cost in all other car parks in the City area, including Par-La-Ville and Bulls Head.
Those using the No. 8 Dock Car Park will not be allowed to move their vehicles from the car park between 5.15 and 8 p.m. on December 31.
The approach road to City Hall car park will be closed from 6 p.m. on December 31 until 10 a.m. on January 2. And the following roads will be closed from 10 a.m. on January 1 until 1 a.m. on January 2: Queen Street -- between Front and Church streets; Burnaby Street -- between Front and Church streets; Reid Street -- between Parliament and Queen streets; Church Street -- between Par-La-Ville Road and Cedar Avenue (except for access to Par-La-Ville Car Park via Par-La-Ville Road); Wesley Street -- between Serpentine Road and Church Street; Victoria Street -- between Cedar Avenue and Wesley Street (except for buses); Washington Street -- between Dundonald and Victoria streets (except for traffic travelling north from Park Street).
Point Pleasant Road and Front Street -- between Par-La-Ville Road and Parliament Street -- will remain closed until 8 p.m. on January 2.
In addition, the following roads will be closed from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on January 1: Front Street -- between Parliament Street and the eastern City boundary; Court Street -- between Front and Reid streets; and King Street -- between Front and Reid streets.
The St. John Ambulance Brigade will be on hand in the Bermuda Gas and Utility car park on Wesley Street throughout the celebrations.
Should there be inclement weather, causing the delay of all or part of the events, those events will take place at the same time on January 2.
Police said notice will be given on any postponement, but this may occur at short notice. If the event cannot take place on Sunday, it will be cancelled.
