Student athletes honoured
athletes, recognised for their sports participation and positive qualities.
The awards, presented annually to secondary and primary school students, are in honour of the late Denton Hurdle, a former physical education teacher and outstanding rugby player. "The best all-round student athletes were the ones that were nominated for the awards,'' said Mr. Clint Smith, director of the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation. "This is the most prestigious award for any student athlete to win or even be nominated for in Bermuda.'' The awards were presented at a reception held in the Student Centre Building of the Stonington College Campus.
Chosen from the 22 nominees were two 12-year-olds, Prospect Primary student Ralph Bean and West End Primary student Gina Cann. Also selected was three-time winner, Daniel Morgan, 18, from Saltus Grammar School and Berkeley Institute's Shequita Parsons 16, who received the award for a second time.
Senator Jerome Dill, Parliamentary Secretary for Education, praised the recipients for their achievements. "I think that from a leadership point of view this is the pinnacle of their sports achievement thus far. It is outstanding to even be nominated,'' he said.
