He recently graduated with merit from The Bermuda College's Professional Chef Programme on June 1 and has just been given The Skal Club Award for 1995.

This, along with the awards he received at the college, shows why Mr.

Rose-Simons graduated at the top of his class.

These awards were The Butterfield Cup, The Citizen Times Cup and The Stonington Beach Shield. They reflect the hard work of a student whose lecturers describe him as "diligent, conscientious and enthusiastic''.

The Skal Club award is presented by the Skal Club of Bermuda, which is the Bermuda Chapter of the International Association to promote friendship and professionalism, according to Mr. Wilhelm Sack, vice president of the club and General Manager of Horizons and Cottages.

Mr. Sack said the award is presented to the student showing the deepest commitment and love for the culinary arts.

According to the college this all comes from a student who, academically, did not always find his courses easy and in many instances had to work much harder than his peers.

However Mr. Rose-Simons was outstanding in his practical classes and this is seen by his recent performance in the Young Commis Competition that was held in May. Although he did not take first place, he caught the judges' attention who said they would be more than happy to employ a chef of Steve's calibre in any of their establishments.

Mr. Rose-Simons told The Royal Gazette that it was his love of cooking and the ability it gave him to be able to create that first got him interested in becoming a chef.

Now that he has finished at the college he has taken on the position of trainee chef at the Southampton Princess Hotel. He plans to carry on his training at the Culinary Institute of America and once that is finished ,Mr.

Rose-Simons would like to return to Bermuda and open his own restaurant.
