Summer Camps in 1998: Learn all about the sea
numerous summer camps for kids ages 11 to 16 according to Helle Patterson, Education Officer. There are four coral camps, starting on July 6 and finishing on August 14, 1998. Each day will be divided between field observation on land and in water, and lab work, involving the use of microscopes and the recording of findings. Camp members will be able to snorkel every day. In Camps I & II for ages 11 to 14, the topics covered and places visited will include: Bermuda's volcanic origins, sedimentation, stratigraphy, Whalebone Bay, marine creature identification, fish behaviour, maintaining a sea anemone tank, food webs of the coral reefs, intertidal areas, mangrove swamps and Spittal Pond. There will be information about coral reef formation and organisms, how corals teach us about climate, the coral reef at North Rock and Natural Arches. Various marine samples will be analysed. Sand granules will be measured. Invertebrates will be identified through a plankton tow. In Camps III & IV, for ages 11 to 14, the topics covered and places visited will include a study on "Native Habitats'' as follows: Beach process and sea grasses, Tobacco Bay to study and compare habitats of sponge, reef, mangrove. Nonsuch Island, Harrington Sound, Spittal Pond, John Smith's Bay and North Rock will also be visited. Ms Patterson advised: "The students learn so much about the marine environment and they have tremendous fun.'' The cost is $200 per camp or $385 for two camps.
Project Ocean '98 will be a Marine Sciences' Camp for 15 to 16 year old students July 13-17, 1998 9 a.m. to 3p.m. for $200.
Ms Patterson explained the focus will be on investigating ocean basins, the organisms which live in the sea, and what the sea water is composed of.
Students will learn how we monitor air and water quality in Bermuda, and many other aspects of oceanography.
"If you like boat trips, swim well and are inquisitive about the sea around us, this is the camp for you!'' she said.
