Tawana needs help to realise her dream
come true.
The singer, dancer and clarinettist has until the end of May to raise enough cash to book her place with the Up With People programme.
So far she has raised $2,000 through donations and her own efforts -- but another $10,000 is still needed.
"I've got a long way to go,'' the Southampton teenager admitted, while pointing out several fund-raising ventures are in the pipeline.
One of these is a February 10 take-out lunch at the Bermuda Public Services Association in Hamilton.
It starts at noon, and Tawana is hoping as many people as possible will buy their lunch there.
Another potential money-spinner is an April 15 concert at which the gifted entertainer plans to perform.
"At the moment I am trying to get some people to perform. I am in the process of finding a hall.'' A possible golf tournament at Ocean View has also been pencilled in her calendar.
Tawana explained she had heard such tournaments were traditionally good fund-raisers.
Tawana has made some progress through bake sales, each of which raised about $300.
The Up With People programme was launched in 1965 to promote peace through understanding, and allows 18 to 26-year-olds to travel all over the world, exploring other cultures and languages, as well as showcasing their musical talents.
Staying with families, they meet leaders of business, industry, government and the arts, and visit schools, hospitals and prisons, and homes for the elderly.
The Bermuda College student plans to be on the programme between July 1995 and July 1996.
Earlier this month she sent out an appeal for help in raising the money.
The appeal resulted in a few donations from individuals although no company has come forward to help.
Anyone who can help Tawana with funding should contact her on 238-3685, or ring her mother at work on 292-6985. Alternatively, they can write to her at P.O. Box WK 442, Warwick WKBX.
