Teacher, civil servant, gombey on honour role

been honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, announced today.

Dr. Idwal Wyn Hughes, a father-of-four who has already been awarded the MBE, has been awarded the CBE in recognition of his work as the Financial Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and his many public duties.

He served as the Financial Secretary until his retirement last year, but is still the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Warwick Academy and the Chairman of the Business Committee of the Church Society.

Dr. Hughes, who was born in Bermuda, was active in the Parent Teacher Associations at the Whitney Institute and the Harrington Sound Primary School.

He also served for many years as Vice-President of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research.

An MBE has been presented to Mrs. Marlene Christopher who was appointed Registrar General in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs in 1986.

Married with three sons, Mrs. Christopher is credited with conducting Bermuda's first referendum and was also responsible for creating an automated birth, death and marriage registration system.

She is also a Sunday School teacher at St. Paul's Anglican Church and in her spare time enjoys growing Bermuda roses and violets, painting and playing the piano.

Eight other Bermudians were awarded the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour, including 85-year-old Mrs. Maisie Pearman who only retired from Warwick Secondary School last year.

She is well known for her interest in the welfare of young people and has been tireless in helping to train them in the arts. Still active in the community, Mrs. Pearman has helped to raise considerable amounts of money for charities and churches.

Mrs. Amy Cook works regularly at the King Edward VII Hospital as a longtime member of the Bermuda Hospital Auxiliary proving herself to be friends of visitors to the Island needing hospital care.

In the past she has looked after tourists, letting them stay at her house while their relatives or friends were getting medical attention.

Mr. Ivan Gibbons has been recognised for his contributions to the community as a builder, sportsman and churchman. As one of the founders of the Southampton Rangers Club, Mr. Gibbons was himself an all-round sportsman, proficient at cricket, soccer, golf and billiards.

For the last ten years he has been a literature evangelist for the Seventh Day Adventist Church and for the work he was placed on the Church's Honour Roll in 1987.

For her work in the community, Mrs. Janine Lines has been honoured. She is currently a director of the National Drug Commission, a director of the Fair Havens Christian Care Association, co-vice chairman of The Council Partners campaign and deputy chairman of the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

She has also been involved in Meals-on-Wheels, the Bermuda Junior Service League and has worked privately with a handicapped child.

Mrs. Frances Robinson has been honoured because of her work with Meals-on-Wheels which she helped found 20 years ago. She is currently chairman of the group's Building Committee.

For more than 12 years, Miss Margaret Tricker has been actively involved in PALS, the Patients Assistance League and Service, which works with people with cancer.

A native of New York, Miss Tricker, who has lived in Bermuda for 32 years, also washed the pots for Meals-on-Wheels and currently works as donations secretary for PALS.

Mr. Richard Tucker is one of the unsung heroes who helps to organise the May 24 Marathon Derby, with which he has been involved for more than 30 years, in which time he has seen the event grow to having up to 500 competitors.

Educated in Canada, Mr. Tucker has retired from the Bermuda Electric Light Company where he was an administrative assistant for more than 15 years.

Mr. Alan Warner has dedicated his life to preserving one of the Island's best-known art forms, Gombey dancing, which he has been performing since he was two-years-old.

A filing custodian at the Bank of N.T. Butterfield and Son by day, Mr. Warner, 38, is Captain of the Warner Troupe of Gombeys which walked off with one of the major trophies in in the Annual Bermuda Gombey Heritage Competition.
