Ten Bermuda college students flying off to France for a month

Ten lucky Bermuda College students will soon be winging their way to Paris, France for four weeks of intensive study in French.

They will be staying at the Alliance Francaise School of Language from June 2-30, studying an intensive conversational French course.

Bermuda College French teacher Mrs. Riquette Bonne-Smith has set up the French study programme, and is assisted by local businessperson Mrs. Francoise Stoll-Leperc.

This scheme is for Bermuda College students and is expected to become an annual event.

The trip has been sponsored by the Bermuda business community which sees the project as a worthwhile investment. The trip is estimated at $3,000 each, including meals, lodging, and spending money.

Money for the project has also been raised through walk-a-thons and bake sales, although the students also raised money through various jobs.

The students going are Ms Twalisha Stevenson, Ms Cherise Carey, Ms Cindy Clarke, Ms Rachel Lambert, Ms Jennifer Glave, Mr. Mikko Trott, Ms Jeannette Bean, Mr. Steven Pett, Ms Tamu Lambert and Ms Jodie Cann.

"The biggest corporate sponsor has been Centre Re, but others include Solvay Finance Ltd., the Bank of Bermuda, Everest Capital, A.P. Roller Bermuda Ltd., and L.P. Gutteridge Ltd,'' Mrs. Bonne-Smith said.

"It is the first time that such a programme involving so many Bermuda College students will take place,'' she added.

"And the emphasis of modern language teaching in the 90s is focused heavily on the concept of proficiency in speaking the language. The best way to achieve this is through total immersion.'' Mrs. Bonne-Smith and Dr. John Coackley will be chaperoning the students during their French experience.
