Top tap dancer set to return to Island
in two special performances of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Tin Soldier'' for Kidfest 1999.
William Orlowski co-founded the National Tap Dance Company of Canada, which scored a huge success in the Bermuda Festival. Three years ago, at the invitation of producer Paula Maguire, he enchanted Kidfest audiences young and old with his production of "Jennifer's Dream''.
Speaking on the telephone from his Toronto base he said, "I am really looking forward to coming back to Bermuda, and I think `The Tin Soldier' will be very popular with all ages.'' Asked how he became a tap dancer, Mr. Orlowski, who said he had been influenced by Fred Astaire, replied: "I just became fascinated that you could create so many different sounds with your feet!'' After his appearance here, Mr. Orlowski returns to Canada for his fourth season as choreographer at the famous Shaw Festival.
"I choreographed Gershwin's `A Foggy Day' for them last year and it was such a hit, they had to bring it back this year. It got wonderful reviews, especially in `Variety', so that has been very gratifying.'' Kidfest's `The Tin Soldier', which is sponsored by PartnerRe, Centre Solutions Ltd. and Zurich International (Bermuda) Ltd., takes place tomorrow, March 14 at the City Hall Theatre at 1 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. Tickets at $15 are available from the Bookmart or at the door.
