The Department of Health stressed that with many charter flights leaving for the Caribbean during Christmas, people should be aware of the viral disease.

Transmitted by mosquitos, it causes flu-like symptoms and has no vaccine.

The fear is that travellers could arrive back in Bermuda from a visit to one of those places, and spread it to the rest of the population whilst it is still in the infectious stage, via mosquitoes which breed on the Island.

Cases of Dengue Fever type three have recently been reported in Trinidad, Jamaica, Belize, Puerto Rico, Barbados and St. Kitts.

Visitors are advised to use insect repellant on all exposed areas of the body.

Further information is available from the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit on 236 0224 ext 237 or 312.
