Scholarship for the year 2000 are Bermudian arts students Meredith Andrews and Cherie Richardson.

Miss Andrews, who is in her second year of studies for a Master of Arts degree in Image and Communications of Photography at London, England's Goldsmiths College, has been awarded $5000.

"I feel privileged to even have been able to apply for the scholarship,'' the delighted student said. "What luck to come from such a beautiful place where the community chooses to invest in its artistic future.'' Miss Richardson, who is in the second year of a Fine Arts programme with a Graphic Design concentration at the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, USA, has been awarded $2000.

"This monetary award will relieve some of the financial strain my parents endure as they aim to assist their children in being an asset to Bermuda's society,'' Miss Richardson wrote in her successful application.

Applicants for the Bank of Butterfield's Fine Arts Scholarship must be Bermudian and enrolled in a recognised visual arts programme outside of Bermuda. In addition to submitting a selection of their work demonstrating artistic achievement, they must also be able to demonstrate involvement in community affairs and extra-curricular activities.

Funds for the scholarship consist of a $5000 donation from the Bank in addition to whatever entry fees and sales commissions are raised by the Masterworks Foundation during the Grand Art Festival by the Sea.

Miss Andrews and Miss Richardson will receive their awards from Bank of Butterfield officials during this year's Festival, which takes place on Front Street on May 21.

The annual event is sponsored by the Bank of Butterfield in collaboration with the Masterworks Foundation.
