But one Paget woman, who recently lost her pet of nine years, put aside her grief to think of others and perform a simple act of kindness.

Contest winner Annette Boyle donated her third place prize (a $200 voucher for dog food) to the SPCA in memory of her dog Shade.

Ms Boyle won third place in the Pedigree Champion's Choice contest, but before she and her German Shepherd/Labrador pet could collect the prize, 13-year-old Shade died.

But Ms Boyle was able to look beyond her grief at losing her best friend and help the SPCA feed other dogs.

"In the middle of the contest she became very ill,'' Ms Boyle painfully recalled. "During her first stay at the vet I decided that regardless of the outcome, if I won something, I would donate it to the SPCA.'' However, despite veterinarian Dr. Andrew Maderios' best efforts Shade eventually succumbed to her illness.

"She was a loyal and good companion,'' said Ms Boyle. "She was a good dog and an excellent neighbourhood watch dog.

"The whole neighbourhood is grieving with me. She was a good dog.'' *** The Council for the Developmentally Challenged invite all interested persons to attend this weekend's Fact-finding Meeting.
