Vibrant senior loves helping others
Have you ever known someone who looked and acted decades younger than they actually were? That's the case with an extraordinary senior citizen, Mrs. Edna Mae Scott.
Mrs. Scott, 92, quietly celebrated her birthday on February 21, by having lunch out with friends.
"My house looked like a flower shop. So many friends and relatives remembered me. My goddaughter in England and both my sons in the US sent flowers. I adore flowers!'' She enjoys gardening outdoors and indoors and taking care of her beautiful home overlooking Harrington Sound. "I enjoy simple pleasures, like watching things grow,'' reflected Mrs. Scott. Every day Mrs. Scott walks two miles daily unless it is raining. She has always enjoyed excellent health and remembers being ill once in 1939 with a bout of double pneumonia.
"God has blessed me. I am careful about what I eat and drink. Sensible nutrition is important to one's health.'' Mrs. Scott is a well known and beloved retired educator who stopped teaching at age 74. At one time she was the headmistress at Harrington Sound School.
She also taught at the Girls Secondary School at Prospect.
A former student, Gail Santucci Palacio, remembers Mrs. Scott when she was the Headmistress at Harrington Sound School, "I was about eight or nine and recall that she was stern but always fair. We highly respected her but we did not fear her because she was kind. She was articulate and always very proper.
I think of her as a role model.'' Mrs. Scott's philosophy about ageing is not to give up simply because you are of a certain age. "Get interested in activities which keep your mind stimulated and the body moving.'' You will probably be shocked to know that Mrs. Scott still drives her car. She also does volunteer driving for the Red Cross. She collects patients who need to go out for various appointments and drives them to their destinations.
Age Concern is another organisation she assists. Her mind is sharp and she has a warm heart. On a daily basis she continues to reach out to people, spreading her positive energy and sharing her sparkle.
"I have found that by helping people less fortunate healthwise my rewards are tremendous. It brings me joy to help others,'' she said.
Mrs. Scott has a lot of vitality and is very focused.
The dynamic senior concluded with a message to other seniors: "As long as your health permits, keep busy and exercise your brain and muscles daily.
Enjoy fresh air and live each day to the fullest.'' A gracious lady: Edna Mae Scott, age 92, keeps her body moving, her mind thinking and provides volunteer service to the community. "It brings me joy to help others.'' SENIORS SR
