Vice-president cares about KBB
vice-president this year. She explained her role: "The board of KBB meet on a monthly basis to discuss current issues affecting the environment, to brain storm about possible new initiatives to combat litter and to evaluate our ongoing education programmes.
"The board also takes part in various seminars through out the year which have some nexxus with the aims and objectives of the charity. For instance, Belco's seminar on 'Electric Vehicles-Challenges & Opportunity', and seminars put on by Friends of Fish and Bermuda Zoological Society.'' She explained why she is committed to KBB and said that protecting the environment is one of the major challenges facing all nations. This challenge is especially true for Bermuda as we depend on our natural beauty and pristine environment to attract tourists.
"We at KBB are cognisant that, given Bermuda's size, population and location it is particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of pollution.
"To this end, it is pleasing to be a member of an organisation with the two-fold aim of (a) acting against the proliferation of litter and other unsightly conditions damaging to the beauty of Bermuda; and (b) educating and promoting awareness in the entire community the importance of existing in a litter free zone. It is only through such continuous and sustained effort that we can realise our aims of preserve our Island,'' she explained.
One of KBB's major goals is recognising Bermuda's dependence on the marine environment for our food, commerce, pleasure and even whether, it has been a particular concern of the charity to exercise a stewardship role over our fragile aquatic resource.
Ms Richardson said: "The Annual Coastal and Marine Cleanup (which is organised in conjunction with the Centre for Marine Conservation's International Coastal Clean up) saw over 700 volunteers in Bermuda (join with over 500,000 volunteers worldwide in more than 90 countries) act to remove marine debris that threatens the survival of our coral reefs and fish and fouls our beaches.'' "We remain forever mindful that we must continue to carefully monitor the beaches and shoreline debris to evaluate effectiveness of cleanups.'' chardson.
