says is its sly introduction of five new channels.

"When you watch channels 7 and 9, they (Cablevision) tell you this channel offer is available and where to find it on your dial,'' said the woman, who wanted to remain anonymous. "But there is nothing that says if you don't want it you must call.'' The company is currently giving subscribers a free preview of Mind Expansion University, Caribbean Satellite Network, Turner Network Television, Cartoon Network and an independent New York channel until February.

But unlike cable television previews in the United States where subscribers must telephone to order the new channel, Cablevision customers must notify the company if they do not want the expanded line up.

Subscribers who neglect to call before January 20 will automatically receive the five channels and be charged an extra $4.95 per month.

"In this busy week, a lot of people are not going to sit down and read the newspaper advertisement which says you must call if you don't want the service,'' the woman said on Thursday. "In January, they'll get a bill and some people don't want it. If I hadn't seen it, I would have been billed for it.'' A Cablevision spokesman refused to comment when contacted.
