Bermuda is growing in popularity as it becomes one of "the'' places to tie the knot.

More and more overseas visitors are choosing the Island to host their nuptials -- bringing millions of dollars in revenue each year. In the last seven years, the number of ceremonies arranged here has increased significantly -- and officials predict the statistics will continue to rise.

Between 1992 and 1997, there has been close to a 25 percent growth, taking the tally from 479 to 592. And although figures for last year are not yet in, Registrar General Marlene Christopher has forecast another rise.

From 1993 to 1996, the tally went from 497 to 583 to 542 to 601.

The increase in popularity of Bermuda is part of a global business in destination weddings, which has grown dramatically over recent years.

And it has come at a vital time for tourism, as the industry strives to re-invent itself.

"People like the idea of having a marriage and honeymoon together,'' she said.

"We do what we can and provide a good service. We hope it will bring in more business.'' The Registrar General has even taken part in seminars in the United States to drum up business. She has addressed Bermuda Tourism staff and bridal media about the services offered here. And the increase in trade brings a spin-off for many Island businesses.

Hotels, restaurants, taxis, musicians, clergy and a whole host of industries benefit from the weddings.

There are also wedding consultants, some of whom maintain offices in North America.

Allister Simmons, managing partner of the Bridal Suite, is predicting an increase this year and possibly an even bigger boom in 2000.

His company arranges around 200 ceremonies each year, bringing people from Europe, Canada, United States and other parts of the world to the Island to marry.

"We don't quite know why Bermuda is getting the attention it is getting,'' he said. "The destination wedding has been growing tremendously over the years.'' One reason for the increase could be a more budget conscious public who want to save by combining their wedding and honeymoon.

Mr. Simmons said many are shying away from a home ceremony for 200 people and arranging a small wedding overseas, with just family and friends -- or just the bride and groom -- in attendance.
