Warwick Academy students host `Act of Kindness' day
In a laudable show of commitment and support for their school, the students of Warwick Academy are hosting a Random Acts of Kindness walk and beach clean-up on Saturday.
The youngsters will begin their walk at the Clocktower Mall, Dockyard at 10 a.m. and end it at Warwick Long Bay, where a picnic and clean-up of the beach and neighbouring coves will follow.
Free T-shirts will be given to the first 400 adults and children participating.
Not to be outdone, Warwick Academy primary school students will complete a mini-walk the same day from Horseshoe Bay to Long Bay. Participants will meet at 12 noon on the grass verge of Horseshoe Bay.
Saturday's event was proposed by the students themselves after they read news about visitors finding trash and broken bottles at Warwick Long Bay. "The students opted to show their concern for their community in a positive light by organising themselves to clean up the entire area,'' said spokesperson Mr.
Stephen Thomson. "They feel this is their chance to contribute to a better Bermuda.'' Random Acts of Kindness was founded in North America and has recently been gaining momentum as communities band together to help each other. Popular talk show host Oprah Winfrey made it the subject of an entire show.
In Bermuda, Saturday's walk and clean-up will also be a fund-raiser for Warwick Academy's Capital Campaign.
"The students believe in their school and in the quality of their education, and are taking this opportunity to help raise funds through pledges for the school's Capital Campaign, which will aid in bursaries and tuition expenses for less fortunate students,'' Mr. Thomson explained.
While the initiative has come from Warwick Academy students, Mr. Thomson stressed anyone willing to participate in Saturday's event was welcome.
"We are encouraging the whole community to support this student initiative by participating in the walk, in the clean-up, or through pledges to this worthy cause,'' he said.
