What PALS does^.^.^.^

PALS cares for any cancer patient in any stage of his/her disease from the moment of diagnosis until discharge or `close of life'.

PALS nurses give counselling to their patients and families constantly. If further counselling is required the patient/family is referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist.

PALS nurses oversee every aspect of the patient's care and visit as often as required depending on need.

A PALS nurse is on call after hours on weekends and holidays for emergency visits.

PALS provides free of charge a vast amount of medical equipment and supplies to its patients.

PALS is the only organisation giving skilled oncology care to patients at home.

PALS's aim is to allow all cancer patients to remain at home during their illness.

PALS pursues initiatives with other organisations (For example it began the prostate education programme with the Bermuda TB Cancer and Health Association).

PALS relies on donations from our generous community to exist.

If donations to PALS were stopped PALS would cease to exist.

...And does not do PALS does not have the resources to care for patients suffering from illnesses other than cancer.

Therefore PALS cares not only for terminally ill as is often mistakenly believed.

PALS does not employ a psychiatrist or psychologist.

PALS nurses do not give private duty shift care.

A PALS nurse is not expected to be called out after hours unless the situation is deemed to be an emergency.

PALS cannot provide medical equipment and supplies to patients suffering from illnesses other than cancer.

PALS services to cancer patients does not duplicate work done by other organisations.

If PALS patients are unable to remain at home, Agape House is an excellent alternative.

PALS's main aim is hands-on care of cancer patients and education of its nurses and volunteers.

PALS does not solely rely on donations from others. PALS volunteers work very hard on annual fund-raising events.

PALS is not directly connected to any other organisation.

TRIBUTES TO PALS The following acknowledgements were received by PALS from those whose lives have been touched by the generous work performed by the charity: "Recently I was a patient and in very poor condition. Words cannot express my appreciation for the dedication, assistance and kindness shown to me by PALS.'' Tributes come flooding in "My time in Bermuda has been immeasurably enhanced by my close contact with PALS patients, the nurses and volunteers. I shall recall the tears and laughter. I will remember our visits and all we have shared. It has been a deeply rewarding experience.'' -- Lady Langley, former Patron and honorary life member.

*** "I admire each and every one of you for your wonderful work and contribution.

May God bless you all.'' *** "I would say that the PALS organisation is one of the most efficient and caring organisations in Bermuda. We could not have done without you.'' *** "As a member of the community, please accept my thanks for the excellent job that you, as a group, provide for the people of Bermuda.'' *** "Words cannot express our gratitude for the kindness and attention displayed to our Mom during her illness. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. May you continue to do your wonderful and special work.'' *** "It is truly amazing that unless one needs the services of a helping organisation such as your own, one has no idea how important they are to the community as a whole and particularly to the lives and people that they touch.'' *** "I am overwhelmed at all the help and support we have received from PALS over the last few months.'' *** "Once again you have been angels. I know you will continue your support for those left as you have done for me.'' *** "You all know, I hope, how much I love being a part of PALS and the wonderful work you do for the people of Bermuda. They know, thank God, and will always, I hope, support you 150 per cent.'' *** "Please accept our donation. As you can see your good works are known far and wide.'' -- Letter from the USA.

*** "As you know, PALS has been a major part of my life here in Bermuda -- really the essence of my time here. PALS is a wonderfully unique organisation of which Bermuda should be very proud. The dedication to patients and the community support is not easily found anywhere else! I leave Bermuda with memories that I will always treasure of volunteers, patients and PALS events.'' *** "I will never be able to thank you enough for your care with such gentleness, kindness and love during these many months.'' *** "It is difficult to express the gratitude I feel towards PALS and the quality of life you have given to us, the cancer patients.'' *** "I don't think anyone can quite know what it is like to `be there' and experience the worth and solicitous care from so many special PALS friends.

One wonders how Bermuda ever functioned for its cancer patients before PALS.'' *** "Without PALS, I don't know how my family and I would have made it.'' *** "We have a special bond with the PALS nurses and I consider them to be earth angels.''
