Yacht club begins 150th celebration
will be held today with re-enactment of the first meeting of yachts at Dockyard, which occurred on January 7, 1845.
Highlight of the yacht club's year-long celebration is expected to be the visit by the Queen during her tour of Bermuda and the Caribbean in late February or early March.
The RBYC is awaiting a reply from Buckingham Palace on its invitation for the Queen to take part in some of the sesquicentennial activities, said club management committee member Mr. Somers Cooper, who is in charge of social activities.
Twenty boats are expected to take part in the flotilla today, he said. The day starts with a members' brunch at 11 a.m.
Rigging is scheduled to begin at about 12.30 p.m., and boats will follow the Cleopatra to Dockyard via the Great Sound.
Other boats taking part should meet at 1 p.m. in Grassy Bay just north of channel marker 33.
Further re-enactments are planned, with one major event scheduled for each month of the year, Mr. Cooper said.
Next month, a re-enactment of the first RBYC members' sail to St. George's is planned.
