A health and fitness lesson for Bermuda, direct from Europe
Bonjour Bermuda! DJLT is coming to you live and direct from Geneva, Switzerland. What a cool place. The first thing you notice about Geneva, and Europe in general, is that people get plenty of exercise and are generally smaller and less obese than Bermudians and Americans. It seems that they get more exercise and generally have a healthier lifestyle. Granted smoking is still prevalent here but people walk more, ride bikes and just seem to be physically smaller. I like the pace of life here. It's really cool, laid back and people seem to be ok. More on this after the top 20.
Rude Boy by Rihanna holds at #1. She is the star of the moment. Haven't heard it in Geneva yet but they do play lots of American and English music. Improving to #2 is Hey Daddy, (Daddy's Home) by Usher featuring Plies. Usher is still on his game. Tumbling to #3 is Everything To Me by Monica, a former essential new tune. Monica still looks good and this is a solid comeback hit.
Up at #4 is Neighbors Know My Name by Trey Songz. Falling to #5 is Hard by Rihanna, the Bajan Bombshell who is on the cover of every magazine and is enjoying her star and star power.
Up to #6 is My Chick Bad by Ludacris featuring Nicki Minaj. Slipping to #7 is Tik Tok by Ke$ha, a popular dance/club/pop sing along hit of the first half of the year. Over, by Drake, improves to #8. At #9 is Say Something by Timbaland featuring Drake, a former essential new jam. Down to #10 is Sexy Chick by David Guetta Featuring Akon Tumbling to #11 is On To The Next One by Jay Z and Swizz Beats. Tumbling to #12 is Bedrock by Young Money featuring Lloyd. Up to #13 is Unthinkable by Alicia Keys. Up to #14 is Nothing On You BoB featuring Bruno Mars. Falling to #15 is Snoop Dogg's I Wanna Rock.
Making its move up the chart to #16 is L'il Freak by Usher featuring Nicki Manj, a former essential new jam and a hot song. Up to #17 is There Goes My Baby by Usher. Usher just keeps putting out hits. He really is a good and consistent entertainer. Tumbling to #18 is Why Don't You Love Me by Beyonce. Down to #19 is Lose My Mind by Young Jeezy featuring Plies. Falling to #20 is How Low by Ludacris. This one had a great run in the charts, which appears to now be over.
Now back to this week's word –getting fitter like the Swiss and Europeans in general. Bermuda may be part of the UK but we are just so American in many things that we do. We have embraced an American lifestyle of laziness. We drive or ride motorbikes everywhere, we eat greasy foods, we drink excessively alcohol and soda and generally don't have as healthy a lifestyle as we could.
Our friends on the east side of the pond do it differently. Their portions are much smaller for starters. Then they spend a lot of time outdoors. This should be an easy one for Bermudians because our weather is great for this. The first lesson from only 12 hours in Switzerland is that we can definitely get more exercise as a way to reduce obesity in Bda. Before the guilty take offence; look in the mirror and unless you can say that you are healthy and your doctor isn't saying that you are overweight; get over yourself and just accept that you could lose a few pounds.
What is being proposed here is a simple plan to lose a few pounds without having to go on some unrealistic, unachievable diet or fitness regime that is not sustainable in the long term. Walking the steps instead of taking elevators comes to mind as an easy one. Limit the greasy foods to just on weekends is another. Going for walks either mornings or evenings is another. Take family, children, etc. with you; it's good for them too. And don't be afraid to have a glass of wine a day or a few days per week. I said one glass; not several. The French have one of the lowest rates of heart disease and they have a glass of wine every day.
The key is moderation but there is so much more that we can do to help ourselves to have more healthy lifestyles. It's important to instill this in our young people at an early age. I saw a guy in Switzerland in a suit riding a bike in the park, probably between meetings or on his lunch. Guess what? he was getting exercise. The key is to eat less food, less greasy food and get more exercise when you can, in the course of your daily routine and this will trim the fat and make you feel better.
Walking around Geneva, I've seen lots of little kids playing, playing soccer, basketball, riding bikes or scooters, doing things that give them some exercise. America has this programme with the NFL whereby they are encouraging kids to get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. This should be the goal for Bermuda's young people and even adults. 60 minutes of exercise per day.
This is achievable and easy if we implement the suggestions above and it will ultimately result in a healthier nation of people who not only live longer; but live healthier longer and have a higher quality of life in the midnight of their lives. It's like the difference between being 70 and being unable to walk or do much; versus being 80 but being able to do most of what you did 20 or 30 years ago.
I would rather be the second of the two. God willing, my plan is to be the healthy 80 and 90 year old who can still walk a mile without being short of breath or having a heart attack. That's quality living and it should be everyone's goal.
Here's to generating a fitter Bermuda. Au revoir de Geneva………………..DJLT.
