A place where everyone knows your name
NONAMES, directed by Kate Lindboe
Tomorrow at Liberty Theatre at 6.30 p.m. and Tuesday at Speciality Cinema at 3.45 p.m.
This is a film which probably everyone in Bermuda can relate to at some point or another.
A study of life within the restrictions of a small town, it focuses on the petty grudges and jealousies which can destroy lives and relationships.
Anyone who has ever suffered 'Rock fever' in Bermuda will be able to sympathise with the characters.
"My dad told me I'd never make a name for myself if I stayed in this town. I never believed him. He said we're all a product of our environment," says main character Kevin.
"Dad says sometimes places like this, they're impossible to escape from, no matter how hard you try."
Set in central Wisconsin and based on true events, NONAMES tells the story of Kevin, a young man who decides to stay with his friends when his father and sister move to the city.
As the blue collar industries in the town slowly die out, his life revolves around drinking and smoking with his buddies, and getting whatever menial work he can.
When his girlfriend CJ is raped however, so begins a cycle of events which will eventually lead to his own demise.
NONAMES is set in the Midwest of the US but could take place in any small town anywhere in the world.
Bleak and depressing, it is a story about the choices we make in life. It is also a tale about family and friendship.
James Badge Dale is excellent as the main protagonist Kevin while Gillian Jacobs also gives a moving performance as CJ.
The plot however – like the protagonist, never really goes anywhere. NONAMES ends on a depressing note so this is probably not the best 'date' movie.
