Aquila Theatre takes on 'An Enemy of the People'
The popular Aquila Theatre Company concludes its return to the 2010 Bermuda Festival stage at City Hall theatre this evening with a thrilling new production of Henrik Ibsen's classic, 'An Enemy of the People'. Curtain time is 8 p.m.
This influential play, by one of the most important playwrights of all time, addresses the irrational tendencies of the masses, and the hypocritical and corrupt nature of the political system they support.
It is the timeless story of one brave man's struggle to do the right thing, and to speak the truth in the face of extreme social intolerance.
Like all the work that the Aquila Theatre takes on, it is challenging, provocative, and above all entertaining.
For those who have never seen the play, the story is nevertheless familiar.
Someone says the sky is falling. Everyone laughs. There is a shark in the water. No, there isn't. Yes, we've seen it. No, we depend on happy tourists, so it can't be – just relax.
Ibsen first put this scenario on stage with this play. Many, many years later, Spielberg scored his first huge hit with an adaptation of it in the legendary film, "Jaws".
Tonight, Festival-goers are invited to sit back and enjoy one of Ibsen's most relevant and timely works – the story of a modern-day whistleblower who has made a shocking discovery.
'An Enemy of the People' is directed by Kenn Saberton.
The Aquila Theatre Company was founded in London in 1991 by Peter Meineck, and has been based in New York since 1999.
