Bermuda at centre of terrorist 'Holy War' in new novel

One of the most explosive fictional terrorist plotlines is about to take place on Bermuda's shores.

Bermuda resident Rod Farrington has just released his fourth novel 'The Isle of devils Holy War'.

Mr. Farrington's previous novels were part of the Bermuda Spinners series and followed the adventures of a group of teenagers. This book is a little more grown-up, he told The Royal Gazette.

"This was going to be the first novel, but I had also developed the Spinners' characters who were teenagers," said Mr. Farrington. "As I got into it I didn't feel that teenagers and terrorists really mixed well.

"So I put this on hold and went ahead and developed the Spinners. As the three Spinners novels developed, one of the minor characters was the Bermuda police inspector called Insp. Savage who is one of two key characters in the book (along with an) FBI agent named Derrick Storm."

In the book the two men attempt to uncover "the most sophisticated and deadly terrorist plot ever set in motion".

"FBI agent Storm is one of the top law enforcement specialists in the United States," said Mr. Farrington. "He has a great respect for the law, but will bend the rules if necessary to apprehend the criminals."

Mr. Farrington said that with today's concerns about terrorism and oil, the topic will resonate with many readers.

"If you look back in history, the Americans from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War were always concerned about a surprise attack by the British out of Bermuda.

"In reverse, the British built most of their forts during that time period because they were worried about the Americans making an attack on Bermuda too.

"So when I talk to people who understand the connection of where Bermuda is, all of the sudden the lights go on and it seems feasible."

He said many people who have read the book have enjoyed following the subplot of the relationship between Savage and Storm.

"First you would think they are like salt and pepper, or oil and water because they are so different," he said.

"One is an FBI agent with academy training. He is used to using lethal weapons. The other is a Bermuda police inspector who has grown up through the ranks. Here, typically the police don't have lethal weapons to use.

"Once you get past that, they are both cowboys. They don't pay a lot of attention to the rules and just do their own things.

"They are both used to running their own show. Here you have two people from very different backgrounds who are similar.

"They are in a constant love/hate relationship, trying to work together. They know they really have to expose the terrorists, but they are always tugging at each other going in different directions.

"There is also a lot of humour in there."

Mr. Farrington said that since he first started writing for fun, his style has changed.

"I have had to try to be more eloquent with my writing style," he said. "My imagination is the real trigger to write.

"Someone who has read all four books would have to tell me if I have improved."

Mr. Farrington uses two editors, a Bermudian and an American, to look over his work.

"They have been working with me on the last two novels," he said. "That helps."

Mr. Farrington said it was probably unlikely that terrorists would take over Bermuda in real life.

"I really couldn't think of many other ways it could happen than the way I described in the book," he said. "The novel is involved with greed for oil. It is about the Arab Oil Company that brought in much cheaper oil."

Mr. Farrington is originally from Louisiana. The book is being sold on the Island and in his home town. It is also being sold through Amazon.com's new electronic reader, Kindle.

"It has already outsold the Spinners novels on Kindle," he said. "And in one of the stores in Louisiana, it has already sold out after only a week."

Mr. Farrington is currently working on a fifth novel, a fourth installment of his Spinners' series. The new novel 'Episode IV – Spinners Death Diamonds of Atlantis' continues in the action adventure tradition of earlier episodes.

Mr. Farrington's son Jason, of Gorilla Design Studio, designed all four book covers.

"Out of the three books I let my son have free rein on two of them," said Mr. Farrington. "The one I gave feedback for wasn't as good. So I learned my lesson. I gave him the storyline and just let him go."

'Holy War' will be sold in sold in stores in Bermuda. For more information about Mr. Farrington go to www.spinners.com.
