Bermuda's own Chewstick set to take Manhattan by storm
New York City is about to be set on fire by Bermuda's own neo-griot movement, Chewstick.
The group headed by Gavin "Djata" Smith will embark on a tour beginning May 5 where they will perform in three Manhattan locations, showing what this tiny Island has to offer.
Saturday night, Chewstick took over the Kaleidoscope Art Gallery for a preview of their New York City tour.
Instead of the normal set-up which includes open mic, Chewstick's best artists took the stage to showcase their set for the Big Apple.
Now, I haven't been to Chewstick for a couple of years so I went in open-minded without any expectations.
But I should have had expectations because every single artist showed up ready to rock and impressed me.
Tiffany, Springflower, KASE, Tanaya, Live Wires, Kofi, Joy Barnum, Djata and that amazing band gave a great show at Kaleidoscope.
Tiffany took the stage twice to bless the audience with spoken word and she definitely has some skills. Her delivery was smooth, the words were thought provoking and creativity oozed from her.
The amazing Joy Barnum performed The Beggar by Mos Def and had the crown captivated from the first note until the last.
KASE was one of my favourites because I had no idea Bermuda had a young man who could rap like that. I would have to describe him as Kanye West influenced but definitely with his own style and swagger.
Now Live Wires absolutely killed it. I've heard his songs on the radio, had a few conversations with him but never put two and two together. His talent is tremendous and I can't wait to hear how he kills it in New York.
Springflower took spoken word to another level with her passion and commitment to entertaining the audience. She spoke for every woman who's been scorned by a man and then had fun rocking it out in her second piece.
Tanaya almost reminded me of India Arie and I loved her mix of poetry and song with a sultry, sexiness about it.
Kofi killed it on the guitar and had so much fun while doing it and of course Djata rocked it out on his guitar with his unique style and soulful voice.
And the band, One Take Dizzle were fabulous.
If there are Bermudians who will be in New York next week, you definitely must check out this show. Not only are these artists extremely talented, but they deliver the goods.
Good luck Chewstick.
