Bermudian artist makes his local debut

A critically acclaimed student artist is opening his second show and his debut on the Bermuda art's scene.

Calix Smith's show 'Que Vive El Concepto' or 'Long Live the Concept' opens at the ACE Gallery today. The collection was on display is his year-end student show, previously displayed at the Bermuda College Art Gallery.

Mr. Smith is a young Bermudian artist currently pursuing his associate degree in art and design at the Bermuda College.

The show consists of 12 drawings and paintings, many in black and white charcoal with splashes of colour. Most of his work offers a social commentary on local and international issues including the plight of young black males.

This is the first student exhibition hosted by the ACE Gallery and is one of the opportunities that developed from a partnership between ACE and Bermuda College.

With a commitment to focus on education and offer career development opportunities, ACE and Bermuda College joined forces in October 2008 to develop a programme of activities to help students make the connection between the subjects they study and the workplace they will eventually enter.

Support includes mentoring, networking, internships, work shadowing and scholarship opportunities. The show runs to September 30.
