BNG event to feature 'a little bit of everything'

Happy hour songstress Bermuda National Gallery development director Gita Blakeney-Saltus will be performing at the Gallery's fund-raising happy hour, 'Champagne, Jazz and Razzmatazz’'on the terrace of Number 6 Shed, Front Street, on Friday evening.

The Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) is taking the concept of Happy Hour up several notches on Friday with its 'Champagne, Jazz and Razzmatazz' event at Number 6 Shed on Front Street.

The aim is two-fold: to raise funds for the Gallery's education programme, and also to bring the BNG and its aims to the attention of a wider public.

"By taking it to Number 6 Shed we hope to encourage the community beyond our City Hall doors," BNG development director Gita Blakeney-Saltus says. "We hope to bring the arts to the streets, and we are also inviting people who partner with us to support our education programme.

"We want to encourage people to visit the BNG, and as a team we also thought it would be great to introduce The Unit, a wonderful group who will be representing Bermuda in Cuba. I will be doing my jazz standards and R&B, and letting the guys do whatever they want. That's why we are calling it, 'jazz and razzmatazz'. It will be a little big of everything."

In addition to champagne and music, guests will have an opportunity to express themselves artistically by participating in the creation of a canvas mural, for which well-known artist Will Collieson will be on hand to assist and give encouragement. At evening's end the canvas will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to the BNG ArtReach Education Programme.

To be held on the outside terrace of Number 6 Shed overlooking Hamilton Harbour, Mrs. Blakeney-Saltus notes that the setting could not be a better way to relax after a long work week, quaff champagne, enjoy the music and the setting sun, and start the weekend off on a fun footing.

"It is going to be a wonderful evening," she promises. "For those who have been going to regular happy hours, this will be something special.

"We really want people to make it their place of choice on Friday evening. This is the first of my 'Jazz and Champagne' nights in the summer, and we are encouraging people to really come out and support the BNG.

"I am looking forward to doing what I do – performing for everyone who comes out and supports us. They are in for a real treat, because The Unit are high-energy and bring lots of excitement."

Champagne, Jazz and Razzmatazz', sponsored by Digicel, is from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and tickets (BNG members $15, others $25) are available at the Gallery. There will be a cash bar, hors d'oeuvres, Digi-cocktails and give-aways. For further information telephone 295-9428.
