Burchall launches series with Garvey biography
Former Dellwood Middle School teacher and reading specialist Colwyn Burchall makes his debut this Saturday, launching the first of an Icon Series of books he has written aimed at Bermuda school children. It is titled Look for Me in the Whirlwind: A Story of Marcus Garvey (right). Second in the series due for release in the summer of 2010 is titled Freedom's Flame: Slavery in Bermuda and The True Story of Sally Bassett
While Whirlwind goes on sale at various Hamilton book stores and on line, Burchall is being personally presented by Brown & Company at the BookMart for a signing from 6.30 to 8.30 pm.
Bermudian Dr. Quito Swan who is Assistant Professor of African Diaspora History at Howard University in Washington, DC in a foreword to the illustrated book, praises Burchall's maiden effort. He stated: "Look for Me in the Whirlwind is written in engaging, refreshing and vocabulary-enhancing language. Without a doubt this book deserves pride of place in the collections of students, families and school."
Burchall chronicles the amazing true story of Marcus Mosiah Garvey from his earliest days, spend in the hills of St. Ann, Jamaica to his founding and visionary leadership of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), noting of course, some of he impact the UNIA had on events in Bermuda from the 1919 onwards.
