Capturing the Island's intimate moments
A Canadian artist's Bermuda inspired work will feature in a new exhibition at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.
Artist in Residence Adrian Baker, who is from Ottawa, will display acrylic paintings on canvas works centred on her interest in the Island's intimate moments of detailed and intriguing natural beauty, including perspectives of birds, a bamboo grove, fruit, seaside and ocean scenes.
Images of Bermuda's human community will also be on display, including a piece featuring Gombey troupe drummers in action.
The Artist in Residence Programme (AIR) features four artists a year in residency in St. George's for three months at a time. They volunteer at Masterworks and teach, as a way of sharing their artistic expertise and art career experience.
Artists present a slide show at the beginning of their stay and an exhibition in the Rick Faries Gallery at the end of their visit.
Mrs. Baker taught three acrylic workshops at the MMBA where her discussion of colour theory and technique assisted acrylic painters and artists of various skill levels in their development of this medium in hands-on detailed instruction.
"Before arriving here, my pre-conceived idea of Bermuda was an island of beaches, palms and pastel houses in the sun," she said.
"This impression, of course, was not far off, but what has caught my attention as an artist are the unexpected images: the gnarled, twisted roots of an ancient tree, a riot of colours in the foliage, the rough texture of eroded coral rock, the serenity of a backlit bamboo grove."
She added: "Due to my limited time here, I have resisted the tendency to over-think and over-plan my paintings, but rather have worked impulsively, exploring the Island and painting images that inspire me.
"Looking beyond the majestic panoramic vistas, I've been drawn towards smaller more intimate scenes, excited by the light, form and colour to be found in even the simplest of subjects.
"Bermuda holds such a wealth of material for an artist to explore that the most difficult aspect for me has been choosing what not to paint. Ultimately, this collection of paintings celebrates Bermuda as a place of great beauty and a place rich in unexpected treasures."
The exhibition run from December 11 to 19 at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art (MMBA) and artwork will be for sale. The opening reception takes place from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
