Every summer for the last three years a team has been working on an archeological dig at Castle Island, which has the oldest standing English fortification in the New World.

The fort was established in 1612 and is also the oldest standing stone building in Bermuda.

The latest find is a King George III ha'penny dating back to 1775. It may be the first coin from that period to be found in an archeological dig on the Island.

Maritime Museum director Dr. Edward Harris, who is leading the dig, said: "We are pleased to have found it. The coin is associated with the re-building of the Castle just after the American Independence war.'' The oldest find at the dig is the Hog Money which was made for Bermuda is 1615. Fifteen pieces were found.
