College student excel in diverse fields

cards for a group of Bermuda College students recognised last week for outstanding achievement.

They were recipients of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce's annual awards designed to recognise students who excel not only in the academic field but who also give back to the community through extra-curricular activities.

They were: business major Miss Dawn Flood, hotel management major Miss Rebecca Sims, Arts and Science major Mr. Cyril Simmons and mechanical engineering student Mr. Deon Cann. Their names will be placed on plaques displayed in various departments at the College.

Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira, on hand to present the awards, urged the four to believe in themselves and "make a difference'' in their chosen careers.

The graduates all spoke highly of the College.

Mr. Simmons, a reverend's son who is active in AME Church youth groups and plans to become a missionary perhaps in India, said anyone could be a high achiever if they possessed the will and desire to make something of their life.

Miss Flood, who was a peer advisor and active on the Student Council, is now interning at BF&M Insurance.

Her advice to other students on college was: "Put all you have into it because that's what you're going to get out of it.'' Miss Sims, an active sportswoman who made the President's List with a 3.9 grade point average, hopes to work for the Tourism Department.

She said the College programmes were excellent and she would like "go around recommending it'' to other Bermudians.

Mr. Cann's sister accepted the award on his behalf as he was abroad at a US university in Arizona studying mechanical engineering.
