Enraptured audience stays on its feet for Jazmine
Hundreds of spectators filed in to the Fairmont Southampton Poinciana room to hear singing sensation Jazmine Sullivan perform her hits.
The pre-Mother's Day show was scheduled to include Jazmine Sullivan and comedian Rickey Smiley and although Mr. Smiley was unable to perform, the concert went off without a hitch.
Philadelphia born Jazmine wowed the crowd with her sultry voice as she belted her top hits 'Need You Bad', 'In Love With Another Man', 'Lions and Tigers and Bears' and 'Bust Your Windows'.
Local talent such as tap dancing, reggae singer Mitchell Trott, hip hop violinist Taylor Rankin, and Joy Bynum all gave the headliner a run for her money as they performed their original pieces.
One audience member, who wished only to be identified as Kim, said: "Bermuda has a lot of talent, I love Jazmine Sullivan and she is an excellent performer, but I have to give it up to my locals as well. We must support our own."
After the full Onion serenade and the comedic styles of host Ed Christopher and Mr. Magic, Miss Sullivan graced the stage to a standing ovation.
From the time she belted out her first note to the time she took her final bow the audience remained on their feet, singing, screaming and dancing through her hits.
Halfway through her performance Jazmine hosted a karaoke session where she selected members of the audience to take to the stage and sing the chorus to her reggae hit 'Need You Bad'.
As brave audience members lined up on stage to sing, the rest judged their performance by a round of applause, as if they were on an episode of Showtime at the Apollo. Some did very well and some had trouble remembering the lyrics.
Either way the only male audience competitor won, although it was evident he won because of his ability to remember lyrics versus his ability to hold a note.
Mr. Smiley did not make it to Bermuda because of weather conditions, although promoters assured the audience that he would still come to the Island on June 10.
Those who attended the concert were told to keep their ticket stub for the future performance.
