Expo to help people consider green lifestyle

Go Green: A family enjoys being in the open spaces at last year's Living Green Expo. This year's event takes place on Sunday at the Botanical Gardens from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

It's called the Living Green Expo and that is exactly what it hopes to do: help people live more 'green'.

One of the organisers, Eugene Dean, of Emperial Group, said the event, sponsored by Greenrock and The Family Council, will have something for everyone.

"People who attend will learn the latest in sustainable living," said Mr. Dean. "We hope that they will be encouraged and inspired to move into a lifestyle that is both economically viable and ecologically sound for Bermuda.

"So whilst renewable energy will be a topic, recycling or separating our waste and reducing waste, water reduction, and also just addressing our current habits regarding consumption, will be others. Our goal is to ensure that people are more informed.

"We can reduce our trash output by half by simply recycling and composting. The event will give people an opportunity to experience the process.

"We are providing something for everyone and our wish is that everyone takes some time to pop in throughout the day. We are trying to incorporate things so that people won't feel that they have to miss out on what they would usually do on a Sunday."

Mr. Dean added that there would also be a traditional Sunday morning breakfast of codfish and potato on hand. In addition, there will be educational booths and exhibitors.

"Local food vendors and exhibits by environmental organisations, family organisations, and companies promoting sustainable living and green technology will be there," said Mr. Dean.

Organisations present will include Department of Energy, KBB (Keep Bermuda Beautiful), Thermax Bermuda, Solar Bermuda, eco-activist Frances Eddy, Greenhouse Bermuda, naturopath Dr. Kuni Frith Black, BDA Zoological Society, Department of Waste Management, Bermuda Engineering Company, Parents Anonymous, Department of National Drug Control, Sunshine League, Women's Resource Centre, Teen Services, Youth Counselling Services, Centre Against Abuse, PRIDE Bermuda, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Family Centre, Windreach, and Lotus.

The entertainment will include music from a variety of genres. Mr. Dean said: "We have Tricray Astwood, Brothers From Another Mother (B.F.A.M) Band, Rhythm Nation, Live Wires, Chewstick, Christina Quinn, Howard Rego, Jahstice and Mohawk Radio."

During the day there will also be a series of short documentary films in the Jack King Building.

At 7.15 p.m. there will be two films under the stars. One is the documentary 'Tapped', which deals with the basic right of clean drinking water.

"The film, which is Stephanie Soechtig's debut feature, is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water," explained Mr. Dean.

"It is a timely documentary that is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatise and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity: our water.

"The inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were the unwitting chips on the table."
