'Fashionable fairy tale' comes true for young Bermudians
A local style and entertainment website is bringing the high fashion industry one step closer to home, by featuring a world famous model.
Stylebermuda.com will kick off their fall fashion season with a photoshoot with Fatima Said from America's Next Top Model Cycle 10.
Style Bermuda also arranged for three young Bermudians to assist with the clothing selection and styling of the photoshoot in Brooklyn, New York.
This summer, Tomisha Goater, Rokeyah Brown and Jahvonna Samuels packed their suitcases and were off to New York City for a week of exciting fashion internships.
The girls were from a Bermuda youth fashion programme called Finesse Productions Style & Fashion.
Part of their internships included helping pick out Fatima's wardrobe for the upcoming photo shoot.
The teens also spent the day at W Magazine and explored the beauty closet at Teen Vogue. They visited Versace and worked with editors from Vibe magazine.
They also work shadowed in the Public Relations Departments of luxury brands Versace and Louis Vuitton and public relations powerhouse Fingerprint Communications.
"For some, this is nothing more than a fashionable fairy tale," said Style Bermuda's Shiona Turini. "But for three young ladies this was their reality this summer, thanks to Style Bermuda and one of the most outstanding youth programmes in Bermuda – Finesse Production's Style & Fashion."
For the past four years, Finesse Productions and Miss Turini of Style Bermuda have collaborated on a life changing experience for the young ladies, offering them a week-long work shadow programme focusing on the fashion and entertainment industries.
At the end of the trip the girls had the to shoot one of their favourite models for Stylebermuda.com's Fall Fashion Story.
"I felt as if I was very privileged to experience this," said Tomisha Goater, 14. "Fatima was as pretty in person as she is on the show."
Miss Turini arranged for the girls to select clothing from luxury brand Louis Vuitton to be modeled by Fatima.
Of the high end clothing choices, Miss Turini explained: "Louis Vuitton is one of the most influential and successful brands in the fashion industry.
"Although the girls may not be purchasing designer brands yet, I wanted them to see that this industry is fueled by the successful marriage of creativity and smart business practices.
"The luxury brands set the trends, then reinterpretations of that trend trickle down to the lower markets, making the trend more accessible in a range of price points."
The Louis Vuitton articles were mixed in with other designer articles of clothing and accessories.
"It was so exciting to see someone model the clothes that we helped choose from Louis Vuitton," said Tomisha.
The Style Bermuda team conceptualised and arranged the photoshoot on a rooftop in Brooklyn.
Titled 'From Dusk 'Til Dawn' the shoot showcases some of fall's biggest trends: black, leather, skirts with volume, and accessories with a 'tough girl' edge.
"I found it interesting how they were matching her makeup and hair with the clothes and the theme of the shoot. This took a lot of thinking and creativity between the team," said Tomisha.
Style Bermuda's ultimate goal was to show the girls the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of the fashion industry.
"For the girls to really understand the industry of fashion as a business, it was important for them to work with not only the trendsetting designer brands, but also with a major model," said Miss Turini.
"It's important to encourage their dreams, and to show them what they can one day achieve.
"Whether they aspire to be an editor, stylist, model, makeup artist or buyer for a boutique, it's our community responsibility to cultivate and encourage their creative goals."
For 14-year-old Rokeyah Brown: "It was a truly memorable experience, one that I will never forget."
'From Dusk 'Til Dawn', will run this week on www.stylebermuda.com in the fashion section.
Excerpts from Tomisha Goater, Rokeyah Brown and Jahvonna Samuels' journals from the trip will be posted in Stylebermuda.com's Spotlight section.
