Folk Club to stage tribute to Paul Gibbons
Bermudian musician Paul Gibbons may have died six years ago, but his legacy lives on.
Next month, the Bermuda Folk Club will hold a special tribute to Mr. Gibbons to raise money for the Paul Gibbons Memorial Scholarship Fund. The annual scholarship helps aspiring young musicians at the Bermuda School of Music.
The Paul Gibbons Memorial Night is on November 13 at the Spanish Point Boat Club.
Mr. Gibbons was president of the Bermuda Folk Club, a musician and active member of the group.
"He contributed greatly to the local folk and rock music scene," said Val Sherwood, president of the Bermuda Folk Club. "He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 12, 2004. He was born in Bermuda and attended Saltus, where his musical talents began to flourish as he entered his teenage years.
"However, it wasn't until his mid to late 20s that, with the encouragement of his good friend Chris Broadhurst, he started making his appearances on the Bermuda Folk Club stage."
She said the supportive atmosphere of the Bermuda Folk Club spurred him on to mature his playing style, and to eventually play professionally.
"For the last two years he appeared with the band Last Rites, providing the solid and precise offset to lead guitarist Keith Phillips, helping to raise the band's musical standard to new heights," she said.
Dennis Eldridge, a sound engineer for the Club, also knew Mr. Gibbons for many years and said: "I came to find out that Paul had played with a number of performers which formed a who's who of local and foreign talent.
"He was also known to many people as one who lent his talents to developing other artists by supporting their efforts on the BFC stage one of whom the golden-voiced Jackie Ayers.
"He appeared with established musician Chris Broadhurst and many other local artists."
Mr. Eldridge said Mr. Gibbons' influence inspired his nephew Daniel to form a band which covers the likes of Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.
"That is a very telling tribute to his deep musical passion," said Mr. Eldridge.
Tickets for The Paul Gibbons Memorial Night are $10 at the door, which opens at 7.30 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m. Scheduled performers include Chris Broadhurst, Valerie Sherwood, Dawn & Mimi Robinson, Peter Haynes, Willie Robinson, Charlie Grainge as well as bands Harrington Sounds and Limestone Live.
"Please come out and help support the Club's final night of live performance for 2010 and help raise funds for this worthy cause," said Ms Sherwood.
