Get kids involved in the things you are doing
A few weeks ago I was doing some landscaping work around my house. You just gotta do that kinda stuff yourself these days if you can; given the prices of landscapers these days!
So I borrowed my neighbour's truck, loaded her up with debris and was about to set off to the Marsh Folly Dump. My plan was to take my son for a ride; thinking that little boys like trucks – they just do.
Don't ask why, they just love trucks. It's a man/boy thing. Then, being the unselfish brother and uncle that I am, I thought to invite my brother's two byes to come along with us for the truck ride.
Initially they said naaah. Then they saw the big truck and said, YES! This is a great way to have fun with boys. More on this after the top 20.
Jumping over another track to capture the top spot is 'California Girls' by Katy Perry, featuring Snoop Dogg, a dance/club/pop and one of the most popular and catchy tracks played in clubs and on radio, worldwide. The song just bangs. You'll find yourself bopping your head.
Improving to #2 is 'Palance' by JW and Blaze, which rocked this summer as the soca anthem of choice. Tumbling to #3 is 'OMG' by Usher featuring Will I AM; a big tune. Up to #4 is 'Find Your Love' by Drake, a former essential new tune.
Falling to #5 is 'L'il Freak' by Usher featuring Nicki Minaj. Improving to #6 it's 'I Love The Way You Lie' by Eminem featuring Rihanna. This is definitely not my favourite track but the list of songs is not about what I like. It's what the people like. Slipping to #7 is 'Nothing On You' by BoB featuring Bruno Mars.
Down to #8 is 'Unthinkable' by Alicia Keys. Jumping to #9 is 'Rockstar 10', another hit by Rihanna. Tumbling to #10 is 'I'm Not A Superstar' by Remady, a dance anthem earlier this year which really did well in Europe.
Improving to #11 is the soca/dance hit entitled 'Party Hard' by Donee'o. In the #12 spot this week is 'Break Your Heart' by Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris.
Improving to #13 is 'Dynamite' by Taio Cruz, another hit from the up and coming male vocalist. Up to # 14 is 'I like It' by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull. Climbing to #15 is 'Ride by Ciara' featuring Ludacris. 'Over', by Drake, falls to number 16.
Now this week's essential new tune. In at #17 it's 'Hello' by Diddy.
Falling to #18 is 'There Goes My Baby' by Usher. Down to #19 is 'My Chick Bad' by Ludacris featuring Nicki Minaj. Tumbling to #20 is 'Neighbors Know My Name' by Trey Songz.
Now back to this week's word – how to raise and have fun with boys. So I took the three little boys for a truck ride. They just loved it.
We went to the Marsh Folly Dump to drop off some debris. They were amazed going into the dump and the expanse of land there.
Then they wanted to honk the horn the whole drive, after which they would giggle.
When we arrived at the dump, they wanted to see the back come up and all the shrubbery fall out. They thought that this was so cool.
They wanted to work the controls to put the back up and down, but I did not allow this.
The thing they enjoyed most was honking the horn, which they did to the extent that they had the workmen at the dump laughing to the point of tears!
They would honk, giggle and the workmen would just crack up! Kids enjoy the simple things.
Then it was time to lift some heavy stuff; I let them help. The heat got to them; they got a tan and a workout.
They enjoyed being at the dump and on a dump truck.
They were all very relaxed on the drive back home and sat quietly.
Hopefully they were chilled for at least an hour when I dropped them off to their daddy, who was happy to find something for them to do for a while. The whole encounter took about 90 minutes.
This is a simple example of how adults can have fun with kids. It's not that hard. Include them in things that you are doing; get them involved, get them away from the computer, the Wii, game boy, Sega Genesis, PSP3 or whatever these kids play with nowadays.
Get them outdoors and give them some exercise. It's better for them and it's better for you.
They get to do stuff and you as an adult get to spend quality time with young people, teach them about being responsible and you can actually also tire them out so that they will be so tired when they get home that they will want to simply take a bath, get something to eat, and then sleep; which keeps them at home and out of trouble.
Here's to spending more time with our kids and finding fun, cool things for them to do ... DJLT.
