Girls grab bank scholarships

Nicola, 17, will enter McGill University in Montreal, Canada, in September.

She is a graduate of Mount Saint Agnes Academy and plans to study biology.

"I feel thrilled,'' she told The Royal Gazette . "I was very surprised.'' Mrs. Peggy Couper, accepting the award on behalf of her daughter, said Julia was also very excited.

"It's a shame we didn't have any champagne,'' she said laughing.

Ms Couper, 25, received her masters in neuroscience from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and plans to pursue her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia.

She attended Bermuda High School for Girls and Warwick Academy.

There were over 90 applicants for the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship, and 36 for the Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarship which was based on all-round merit.
