Horrors of Katrina captured on film

Traumatic times: A scene from the award-winning documentary, 'Trouble the Water' – an inside look at how residents of New Orleans lived through the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The film screens tomorrow evening at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute as part of the Bermuda International Film Festival's film series.

A documentary film cataloguing the horrors of Hurricane Katrina as it devastated New Orleans is to be screened in Bermuda tomorrow.

'Trouble the Water' was this year's winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was directed and produced by 'Fahrenheit 9/11' and 'Bowling for Columbine' producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, and takes the viewer inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen.

The film opens the day before the storm makes landfall just blocks away from the French Quarter, but far from the New Orleans that most tourists knew. Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist, is turning her new video camera on herself and her Ninth Ward neighbours trapped in the city.

"It's going to be a day to remember," Kim declares.

As the hurricane begins to rage, and the floodwaters fill their world and the screen, Kim and her husband, Scott, continue to film their harrowing retreat to higher ground, and the dramatic rescues of friends and neighbours.

The filmmakers document the couple's return to New Orleans, the devastation of their neighbourhood, and the appalling repeated failures of government.

Weaving an insider's view of Katrina with a mix of verité and in-your-face filmmaking, the 96-minute documentary is a redemptive tale of self-described street hustlers who become heroes – two unforgettable people who survive the storm and then seize a chance for a new beginning. Aside from its win at Sundance, the film also won the Grand Jury Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. It is currently having a theatrical release in the United States.

The film is the Bermuda International Film Festival's Film Series selection for October and will be screened tomorrow evening in the Trade Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, beginning at 6.30 p.m.

For an hour prior to the film's screening at BUEI, BIFF will hold a Silent Auction of selected items from its ongoing 'Online and Silent Auction'. The online portion of the auction is active at www.biff.cmarket.com and closes on Sunday, October 26.

Tickets (BIFF Film Club members $8, non-members $10) can be reserved by e-mailing the Festival at info@biff.bm.
