Let's give peace a chance at Cup Match

Rihanna performs during a stop on her "Last Girl on Earth" tour at Staples Center in Los Angeles last week. She has two new entries in the chart this week.

Can you believe its Cup Match already? We're 60 percent of the way through 2010 already! Last week we discussed how the Eastern Counties has become a laughing stock of local cricket. Cup Match, while a better spectacle and spectator event than the Eastern Counties, could still use some help on the bit about forcing a result.

But the dudes and dudettes who run the show deserve props for improving it and modernising it. More on this after the top 20.

Up to #1 is Unthinkable by Alicia Keys., one of the most popular and talented artists on the circuit. Up to #2 is Nothing On You BoB featuring Bruno Mars. Climbing to #3 is L'il Freak by Usher featuring Nicki Minaj, a former essential new jam and a banger. Over, by Drake, falls to number 4.

Up to #5 is I'm Not A Superstar by Remady, one of DJLT's favourite tracks at the moment. Jumping to #6 its Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris. Slipping to #7 is My Chick Bad by Ludacris featuring Nicki Manj. Down to #8 is There Goes My Baby by Usher.

Up to #9 is OMG by Usher featuring Will.i.am. Climbing to #10 is California Girls by Katy Perry, featuring Snoop Dogg, one of the hottest crossover tracks of the moment. Tumbling to #11 is Neighbors Know My Name by Trey Songz. Improving to #12 is a former essential new hit: Commander, by Kelly Rowland featuring David Guetta. Rude Boy by Rihanna falls to #13.

Improving to #14 is the soca hit of 2010 – Palance by JW and Blaze, which is mashing up the place.

There is plenty of positive feedback about this track on the soca websites at the fetes and I expect it to be played extensively over Cup Match. Falling to #15 is Hard by Rihanna. Sliding to #16 is Hey Daddy, (Daddy's Home) by Usher featuring Plies. Down to the #17 spot is Everything To Me by Monica. Up to #18 is Find Your Love by Drake, last week's essential new tune.

Now this week's essential new jam. In at # 19 its I Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna. What a collaboration, eh? One of the hottest rappers with one of the hottest female singers/entertainers. Another new hot track, in at #20 is Rockstar 101 by Rihanna, who has to be the hottest female vocalist at the moment. She's everywhere. I like Beyonce but Rihanna is dropping it like its hot these days.

Now back to this week's word – Cup Match. Let me start by commending the management teams at Somerset, this year's hosts, and St. George's, the Champions, for stepping up the entertainment value of Cup Match over the past five years. Richard Scott and Neil Paynter have been maverick, modern, bold and visionary leaders who have introduced new initiatives during their respective reigns that have modernised Cup Match and made it a bit more like international sporting events, to the extent possible.

Some people are angry about the fact that you can no longer bring your own food and beverage into the game. I understand that our tradition is such that this is the way we have always done it.

But let's be real – where else in the world can you go and take food into a match?

Bermudians are some of the most travelled people on the planet and many of us have attended NBA, Baseball, NFL, NHL, heck some of us even attended the recently concluded World Cup – in South Africa! You cannot take food or beverages into those grounds.

Yes, the NFL fans have tailgate parties but those are in the parking lots and not inside the stadiums.

So all the Cup Match organisers are doing is stepping up the event and making it more professional. For the record, I agree with this initiative and fully support it.

People don't like change. I'm cool with change; as long as it makes sense and is about forward progress.

You can say an event needs to improve but when people take steps to improve it you always get resistance. It should not stop progress and in this case it hasn't, thankfully.

The onus however, will be on the organisers and the concession owner/entrepreneur, to have enough food and beverage stations to satisfy the thousands of people who will be there and to have good food and Bermuda food that people would have brought themselves.

In case the concessionaires are not on top of their game and want some advice; you must have fish and chips, peas and rice, potato salad, coleslaw, hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, chicken legs, Bermuda Fish if you can, mussel pie, conch stew, mullet roe (if they're really that bold and wish to acknowledge my St. David's cousins).

Now the cricket. Let's just make sure that we have an exciting match. It would be nice for St. George's to win outright to retain the Cup but please let the fans have an entertaining match.

Let's also recognise and acknowledge the history of the event and why it was started.

Also, let there be no violence, shooting, killings, drug/gang nonsense, no boating accidents and just peace and love in Bermuda over the Cup Match Holiday. It is my birthday on Friday, people – so please give me Peace and Love as a birthday present.

I don't need material things; I just want World Peace and I want it to start in my Beautiful Bermuda! Please?

So get over it haters; Cup Match is improving and modernising.

You either get on board or don't come and be left out of the progress of the event. But whatever you do this weekend, be safe. Peace be with you... DJLT
