Nova to perform at Folk Club

Heather Nova

Recording artist Lindsay Ferguson will be fulfilling a dream engagement when she appears at the Bermuda Folk Club tomorrow and joins the Island's own international singer/songwriter Heather Nova at the top of the bill along with Alana Dean and Joy Barnham.

Heather Nova is one of Lindsay's musical inspirations and influences. It wasn't until she arrived on the Island this week that she got the news that Nova would be one of the other performers at the folk club's once-a-year night dedicated to female artists.

The evening of music at the Spanish Point Boat Club is shaping up to be a classic, with so many high calibre performers and the strong likelihood the music will be held on the outside 'shell' stage by the water's edge.

For Lindsay, it is a homecoming of sorts as she was born on the Island and lived here until the age of four. Her father John worked for both ZBM and VSB.

Since leaving she has travelled and lived in a number of countries, including Ireland and her current residence in Toronto, Canada.

During her travels she has performed at a number of venues and festivals including The Ottawa Bluesfest, The Belleville Waterfront Festival, Blueskies Music Festival, The Atlantic Music Fest and Westfest. She has been featured on various television stations and gets regular airplay on CBC in Canada.

And Lindsay has even performed before U2's Bono - that was back in 2002 when she lived in Ireland.

"He was really friendly and enjoyed my music and voice, so whenever I feel low in the big bad world of music, I think 'well if Bono liked my voice, then I'm getting up'," she said.

It was four months ago that Ferguson decided to dedicate all her time to her musical career, giving up her waitress job in Ontario to work on her album 'Sound' which is about to be given a full launch following the securing of deal with a distribution company. Coming back to Bermuda is something Lindsay looks forward to. She was last on the Island three years ago for the launch event of Val Sherwood's own CD release.

Tomorrow, Lindsay will be showcasing songs from her album and describes her music as encompassing pop, folk and soul.

"I have lots of different influences, such as R&B and folky stuff. Some of what I play when I have a band is really quite rocky," said Lindsay.

She admires performers such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Madonna and of course Heather Nova.

As for having the opportunity to play in Bermuda, Lindsay is delighted to be back on the Island and views it as a chance to widen the potential audience for her music, particularly now that she has secured a distribution deal.

The Bermuda Folk Club starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 on the door.
