Philharmonic stages 'Strings in the Spring' for Mother's Day

Featured soloist: Alex Tuchman

The Bermuda Philharmonic Society is presenting a classical music concert, 'Strings in the Spring', on Mother's Day at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

Lorant Oswald will conduct the approximately 30 musicians, with Charles Knights as concert master.

The programme will include such popular favourites as Samuel Barber's 'Adagio'; Bach's 'Air on the G String'; and Mozart's 'Divertimento in D major'.

The featured soloist is young pianist Alex Tuchman, who will perform Bach's 'Piano Concerto in F minor'.

"We are very excited to showcase the talent of a very gifted young musician who is sure to be an inspiration," Bermuda Philharmonic president Kent Hayward said.

In addition to conducting, the multi-talented Mr. Oswald is also an arranger, plays the keyboard and trombone as well as the trumpet. He is also a music teacher. He has studied choral and orchestral conducting at universities in Hungary and Germany.

Past appointments include being in charge of the Etobicoke (Canada) School of the Arts band programme, where he conducted various jazz ensembles, concert bands and symphony orchestras, and serving as musical director of various professional and community theatre performances in Europe and Canada.

Now teaching music in Bermuda, Mr. Oswald has also played with various local groups; including the orchestra for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society's production of 'Dreamgirls', and at the Bermuda Music Festival for the O'Jays, as well as with the Wall Street Band.

Tickets (adults $25, children/seniors $10) are available from bdatix.bm, members of the Philharmonic Society, and at the door. The performance begins at 6 p.m.
