The movie of the year for women is about to land in Bermuda.

But while most women fantasize about Manolo Blahniks and sipping cocktails in a swanky Manhattan bar, spare a thought for those halfway around the world who are struggling for a simple cup of water and the shoes on their feet.

Local writer Catherine Kennedy is appealing to the women of Bermuda to help the survivors of the Myanmar cyclone by attending a girls' night out — a charity screening of "Sex and the City".

The screening takes place at 5.30 p.m. on June 1 at the Liberty Theatre. There are 270 tickets available at $25 each, and the women-only event will also have fun door prizes on a "Sex and the City" theme.

Ms Kennedy said: "I just thought it would be fun to get a group of women together to do something good, and hopefully have fun at the same time — especially if you're going to see the movie anyway.

"I thought it would be a good opportunity for women to help other women living in desperate and dire circumstances, and so I want to encourage everyone to come along."

More than 1.5 million are destitute following Cyclone Nargis, which tore through the Irrawaddy delta rice bowl two weeks ago. The hurricane left 100,000 people dead or missing but could now claim more lives through disease and starvation.

Ms Kennedy hopes the fundraiser will also help the China earthquake relief effort.

She said: "No one can fail to be moved by the footage of the severe devastation faced by millions of people in China and Myanmar. Countless families there are grieving for loved ones while living without even the most basic of necessities.

"Please gather your friends for the charity screening of 'Sex and the City'. All proceeds will go to the Bermuda Red Cross to help those affected by the aftermath of the horrific cyclone and earthquake in Asia."

To purchase a ticket, e-mail Ms Kennedy at: ckennedy@logic.bm. Tickets are collected from the Bermuda Red Cross at 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget. The Bermuda Red Cross: 236-8253.
