Ten tips to delay and prevent the onset of diabetes

There are 50 ways to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes on the Bermuda Diabetes Association webpage. Here are ten of them.

1. Keep meat, poultry and fish portions to about three ounces (about the size of a deck of cards).

2. Try not to snack while cooking or cleaning the kitchen.

3. Eat breakfast daily.

4. Share a single dessert.

5. Listen to music while you eat instead of TV (people tend to eat more while watching TV).

6. Chew slowly. It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to send a signal to your brain that you're full.

7. Choose foods low in saturated fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

8. Make fewer phone calls and instead catch up with friends on a regular basis during a planned walk.

9. Eat foods made from wholegrains — such as whole wheat, brown rice, oats and wholegrain corn, every day. Use wholegrain bread for toast and sandwiches; substitute brown rice for white rice for home-cooked meals and when dining out.

10. Try eating foods from other countries. Many dishes contain more vegetables, wholegrains and beans and less meat.
